Is there a difference between rivalry and vandalism?
I’ll admit it sounds a bit like an English prompt. Something you would answer blandly for the grade.
Is there a difference between rivalry and vandalism? Well, sure, one is illegal and the other just simple competition. Right? There’s nothing wrong with a good old fashioned rivalry.
In 1899, legend has it that our rock was located at Granite Quarry, dragged to the Cheyenne High School campus and engraved with a message from the class. You see at that point in Cheyenne history there was only one high school. Cheyenne itself only had a population around 1,500. But by the late-1950s the population had skyrocketed.
Cheyenne High School’s total enrollment had reached 1,799 and the upcoming senior class was at nearly 500 students.
That year, 1959, the school board enacted a “two shift system” of classes. In a nutshell, half the population would attend their classes in the morning and go home at lunch. Following lunch the other half of the population would attend all classes in the afternoon. Everyday. Teachers were overwhelmed and they filed a complaint with the school board claiming that this new schedule had been approved without their input.
The superintendent resigned in early-1960 and with him East High School was born.
